At Serenity Sands we believe the main idea of ecotourism is to develop recycling, energy efficiency and conservation programs and to create economic opportunities for the local community.
Serenity Sands collects rain water in a large cistern. We use water-wise gardening methods and mulch lawn clippings to preserve moisture. Shampoos, conditioners and soaps are paraben, sulfate, and cruelty free. Cleaning supplies are phosphate and chemical free and are biodegradable. All gardening is done using chemical free pesticides and fertilizers. Our breakfasts are either from our own organic garden or are sourced naturally.
As a new resort, we have a long way to go, but our long term goals for sustainability programs are to partner with established environmental groups, to provide animal abuse training to children, and to support the education of local students. To date we have sponsored wildlife projects and are a donating member of the Belize Zoo. We have provided food and supplies during emergency situations and have donated medical supplies and assisted Canadian and US charity groups to bring in needed medical equipment and supplies to the Corozal area.
Staff and guest education is an integral part of our success. We realize this is just a start and that there are many more practices we can and will try to implement.
