At Serenity Sands we believe the main idea of ecotourism is to develop recycling, energy efficiency and conservation programs and to create economic opportunities for the local community.
We are always working to minimize our impact on the environment.
We have preserved the mangroves on the beach, as well as a number
of coconut palms and sea grape trees. This not only reduces erosion
but also provides a habitat for small sea creatures and birds.

Serenity Sands is completely off-grid using solar and wind power with generator backup. A large percentage of the lighting is energy saving compact florescent. All fans are energy efficient and are used throughout the resort to reduce the use of air conditioning. We use on demand water heaters, and all lights and fans are shut off when not in use. Towels are laundered every 3 days and sheets every 7 days, or when requested.
Serenity Sands collects rain water in a large cistern. We use water-wise gardening methods and mulch lawn clippings to preserve moisture. Shampoos, conditioners and soaps are paraben, sulfate, and cruelty free. Cleaning supplies are phosphate and chemical free and are biodegradable. All gardening is done using chemical free pesticides and fertilizers. Our breakfasts are either from our own organic garden or are sourced locally.
Serenity Sands strives to reduce our carbon footprint by continually improving or adding to our waste management practices. We use recycled content toilet paper and tissues and corn based plastics when ever possible. Cloth napkins are used and bedroom sheets and bathroom towels are made from bamboo or cotton. Kitchen and garden waste is either composted or fed to the chickens. All our wood furnishings and paintings are purchased from local artisans and we employ our staff locally.
As a new resort, we have a long way to go, but our long term goals for sustainability programs are to partner with established environmental groups, to provide animal abuse training to children, and to support the education of local students. To date we have sponsored wildlife projects and are a donating member of the Belize Zoo. We have provided food and supplies during emergency situations and have donated medical supplies and assisted Canadian and US charity groups to bring in needed medical equipment and supplies to the Corozal area.
Staff and guest education is an integral part of our success. We realize this is just a start and that there are many more practices we can and will try to implement.
